Acupuncture for Mental Health
Supporting Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, Insomnia, and More
If you are living with anxiety, depression, chronic stress, or trauma, you already know how much these experiences affect every part of your life, as your sleep, your relationships, your energy, and your sense of self. You are not alone, and you deserve support that meets you where you are.
At Twelvem Acupuncture in Ottawa, we offer acupuncture as a compassionate, evidence-informed complement to mental health care. While acupuncture is not a replacement for therapy or psychiatric treatment, research shows it can play a meaningful role in calming the nervous system, rebalancing brain chemistry, and supporting emotional resilience, in ways that many people find deeply helpful.
This page explains the science behind how acupuncture supports mental health, and how it may help with specific conditions.

Balancing Neurotransmitters — Serotonin, Dopamine, and GABA
Many mental health conditions involve imbalances in key brain
neurotransmitters. Acupuncture has been shown to influence
the production and regulation of:
-
Serotonin: the neurotransmitter associated with
mood stability, emotional well-being, and sleep.
Low serotonin is strongly linked to depression and anxiety. -
Dopamine: involved in motivation, pleasure, and
reward. Disruptions in dopamine signalling are
associated with depression, OCD, and ADHD. -
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid): the brain's primary calming neurotransmitter. Low GABA activity is associated with anxiety, panic disorders, and insomnia.
-
Norepinephrine: involved in attention and alertness. Dysregulation contributes to PTSD, panic attacks, and anxiety.
By stimulating specific acupuncture points, practitioners can influence these neurochemical systems, helping the brain find a more balanced state, naturally.
Acupuncture is one of the most reliable ways to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. During and after a session, patients experience a measurable drop in heart rate and blood pressure, slower and deeper breathing, and a profound sense of calm, not because they are distracted from their problems, but because their nervous system has genuinely downshifted.
Acupuncture has been used for centuries to support emotional well-being during difficult periods, and modern neuroscience gives us language for why it works. By helping the nervous system regulate, improving sleep, and providing a moment of genuine stillness in a busy life, acupuncture creates the conditions in which healing naturally occurs.

What to Expect at Twelvem Acupuncture
Your first appointment begins with a thorough intake conversation — we want to understand not just your symptoms, but your life, your history, and your goals. Mental health support requires a whole-person approach, and that is exactly what we offer.
Sessions are quiet, gentle, and unhurried. Many patients fall asleep on the table. Needles are retained for 20 to 40 minutes while you rest, with soft lighting and a calm environment designed to support your nervous system's natural healing capacity. We recommend an initial course of 6 to 10 weekly sessions for mental health concerns, with reassessment as you progress.
You Deserve to Feel Better. We Are Here to Help.
Taking the first step toward mental health support takes courage. At Twelvem Acupuncture in Ottawa-West, we are committed to providing a safe, non-judgmental space where you are seen, heard, and cared for.

⚠️ A note on mental health support: Acupuncture is a complementary therapy and is not a substitute for professional mental health treatment, crisis intervention, or psychiatric care. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact a mental health professional, call 988 (Canada's Suicide Crisis Helpline), or go to your nearest emergency department.
