Compassionate Support for Women's Health — and Men's Too

Whether you are trying to conceive, navigating a fertility treatment, managing menstrual pain, or moving through the many changes of perimenopause and menopause, your reproductive health is deeply connected to your overall well-being. And it deserves to be taken seriously.

At Twelvem Acupuncture in Ottawa, we offer specialised acupuncture care for reproductive and hormonal health. Our approach is grounded in evidence-based research, informed by Traditional Chinese Medicine, and always guided by deep respect for your body and your journey.

Women's Reproductive Health

Reproductive health is governed by a finely tuned interplay of hormones, circulation, nervous system activity, and emotional well-being. When any of these is out of balance (whether due to stress, age, underlying conditions, or unexplained causes), fertility and hormonal health can be affected.

Acupuncture works through several key pathways that can be balanced at any stage of your life:

Woman's health and Fertility Acupuncture in Ottawa
  • Fertility and Infertility Support

  • IVF Support: Before, during, and after transfer

  • Menstrual Disorders and Cycle Health

  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

  • Postpartum recovery and hormonal rebalancing after birth

  • Low libido related to hormonal changes or stress

  • Pelvic pain and interstitial cystitis

  • Acupuncture during pregnancy — for nausea, back pain, and preparation for labour (CLICK HERE)

  • Menopause and Perimenopause

  • Hot Flushes and Night Sweats, Joint Pain and Musculoskeletal Changes

Fertility and Infertility Support

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse (it affects roughly 1 in 6 couples in Canada). The experience of trying to conceive without success is one of the most emotionally demanding journeys a person can face. Hope, grief, and uncertainty can coexist in the same breath.

Acupuncture does not promise miracles, but it offers something genuinely meaningful: a treatment with growing evidence supporting it that addresses the biological factors underlying fertility, while also supporting your emotional well-being throughout the process.

Fertility acupuncture at Twelvem may help by:

  • Regulating menstrual cycles and promoting regular ovulation

  • Improving egg quality by enhancing ovarian blood flow and
    reducing oxidative stress

  • Optimizing the endometrial lining for embryo implantation

  • Supporting hormonal balance — including FSH, LH, estrogen,
    and progesterone

  • Reducing the anxiety and emotional burden associated with
    fertility treatment

  • Addressing underlying conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, and thyroid dysfunction that contributes to infertility

We typically recommend beginning acupuncture treatment at least 3 months before a planned conception attempt or IVF cycle, as this aligns with the 90-day maturation period of follicles (eggs). However, acupuncture can offer benefits at any stage of your fertility journey.

🔬  IVF Support — Before, During, and After Transfer

If you are undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI), acupuncture can serve as a powerful, evidence-informed complement to your fertility treatment without interfering with your medications or protocols.

Male Fertility and IVF Support

Reproductive health is a shared journey, and men's health matters too. Acupuncture can offer meaningful support for several conditions that affect male sexual and reproductive health, as well as for men whose partners are undergoing IVF.

Male factor infertility accounts for approximately 40–50% of all infertility cases. Sperm parameters, including count, motility (movement), morphology (shape), and DNA fragmentation, are all influenced by factors such as oxidative stress, heat exposure, hormonal imbalance, and lifestyle.

As with women, we recommend men begin acupuncture at least 3 months before a planned conception attempt or IVF cycle, aligning with the approximately 72-day cycle of sperm production (spermatogenesis).

For men supporting a partner through IVF, acupuncture can also help manage the stress and emotional weight of the process, which is often underacknowledged.

Men's Health

Erectile Dysfunction

ED is more common than most men realize, and more treatable than many expect. If you're finding it difficult to achieve or maintain an erection, you're not alone, and there's no need to navigate this in silence.

Acupuncture can help by improving blood flow, calming the nervous system, and reducing the performance anxiety that often keeps the cycle going. It works particularly well for ED that has a psychological or mixed-cause component. We always recommend a check-in with your doctor to rule out any underlying cardiovascular factors, and we're happy to work alongside your physician as part of your care.

Premature Ejaculation

PE is the most common male sexual concern, and one of the least talked about. If this resonates with you, know that it has real physiological roots and that acupuncture can genuinely help.

By calming overactive nerve responses and supporting serotonin regulation, acupuncture can improve ejaculatory control gently and without side effects.
