Acupuncture in Ottawa

Ancient Wisdom. Modern Science. Real Results.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world, and one of the most studied. At Twelvem Acupuncture in Ottawa, we bring together more than 2,500 years of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the latest evidence from Western biomedical research to offer you care that is both deeply rooted and rigorously informed.

Whether you are dealing with pain, stress, a chronic health condition, or simply seeking to feel more like yourself, acupuncture offers a pathway to healing that works with your body, not against it.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile, single-use needles into specific points on the body. These points lie along pathways that influence how the body functions, heals, and regulates itself.

It is a therapy that speaks two languages at once: the language of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the language of modern neuroscience. At Twelvem, we listen to both.

The Eastern View — Qi and the Meridians

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, health is understood as the harmonious flow of Qi (pronounced "chee") — the vital energy that moves through the body along pathways called meridians. When Qi flows freely, the body is in balance. When it becomes blocked, depleted, or misdirected, symptoms arise: pain, fatigue, illness, and emotional distress.

Acupuncture needles are placed at precise points along these meridians to remove blockages, restore flow, and bring the body back into a state of balance. This is not a metaphor. It reflects thousands of years of careful clinical observation about how the body responds to specific stimuli at specific locations.

The Western View: Nerves, Hormones, and the Brain

From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture points correspond closely to areas rich in nerve endings, fascial tissue, and neurovascular bundles. When a needle is inserted, it triggers a cascade of measurable physiological responses:

  • Release of endorphins and enkephalins — the body's natural painkillers

  • Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body from stress into rest and repair

  • Modulation of neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and GABA

  • Reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-alpha

  • Improved local and systemic blood circulation

  • Neuroplastic changes in the brain's pain and emotional processing centres

These are not theories! They are documented in peer-reviewed research, including neuroimaging studies, randomised controlled trials, and systematic reviews published in leading medical journals.

Our Integrative Approach

At Twelvem, we don't ask you to choose between East and West. Our practitioners are trained in both traditions and use whichever lens (or combination of lenses) best serves your individual needs. We call this integrative acupuncture: the best of ancient wisdom, guided by modern understanding.

Your First Visit

We begin with a thorough intake conversation. We want to understand not just your main concern, but your full health picture: your sleep, digestion, energy levels, stress, emotional wellbeing, and medical history.

In Chinese medicine, everything is connected, and the more we understand about you as a whole person, the more effective your treatment will be.

Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture

- Does acupuncture hurt?

Not really, and most people are genuinely surprised by this. The needles are extremely fine, and insertion is usually barely noticeable. You may feel a brief warmth, tingling, or heaviness at some points, which is a normal and positive sign. The overwhelming majority of patients find sessions deeply relaxing.

- Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. When performed by a qualified, registered practitioner using sterile single-use needles, acupuncture has an excellent safety record. Serious adverse events are extremely rare. Minor side effects such as light bruising or temporary soreness at needle sites can occasionally occur.

- How is acupuncture different from dry needling?

Dry needling targets myofascial trigger points specifically within muscles and is often performed by physiotherapists or chiropractors as a single technique. Traditional acupuncture encompasses a much broader system, working with the whole body through hundreds of points with additional physiological effects beyond trigger point release. Our practitioners are trained in both.

- Is acupuncture covered by insurance in Ontario?

Many extended health benefit plans cover acupuncture performed by a Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac.). We offer direct billing to most major providers. Check with your insurer to confirm your specific coverage.

- How do I know if acupuncture is right for me?

The best way is to book a first appointment and have an honest conversation with your practitioner. We will tell you candidly whether acupuncture is likely to help your condition, what realistic expectations look like, and whether another modality or a referral to another provider might serve you better.

- Can I have acupuncture if I'm pregnant?

Yes! Acupuncture is safe during pregnancy when performed by a practitioner trained in prenatal care. We treat many pregnant patients at Twelvem for nausea, back pain, pelvic girdle pain, and birth preparation. There are certain acupuncture points that are avoided during pregnancy, and our team is fully trained in these protocols.

- What should I do to prepare for my first session?

Eat a light meal beforehand (don't come on an empty stomach), wear loose, comfortable clothing so we can easily access your arms, legs, and abdomen if needed, and try to arrive a few minutes early so you're not rushing. Most importantly, come with an open mind and no expectations. Most people love it.
